Akié Arichi, a Japanese publisher in Paris – Una  casa editrice d’eccellenza

the publisher Akié Arichi in her gallery in Paris

Akiè Arichi in Keller street, Paris

Some time ago, Keller street in Paris, in the Bastille area, was largely dedicated to art. Now only one gallery survives: that of Akié Arichi. At the time, the gallery was opened in a district far from the capital’s great artistic centres, far from the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse. The street filled with galleries, then gradually emptied. It’s true that this area was not attractive at the time. Today, however, it is very popular.

French, South American and Japanese artists

Akié Arichi showed French, South American and, of course, Japanese artists in her spaces (she had a market in her home country). Slowly, Mrs Arichi managed to attract collectors and amateurs. In 1990, she decided to become a publisher. She published catalogues, but almost all galleries did this. In addition, she devoted herself to luxury publishing, with precious paper, original works and bound boxes with a very carefully designed typography.  The first authors were Humberto Castro and Dimitri Anatolis in 1993. Thirty years have passed, then.

French poets and classical Japanese literature’s authors

Since then, she has published mainly poets, such as Jean-Clarence Lambert, Alain Jouffroy, Kenneth White, Bernard Noël, Gilbert Lascault, Michel Butor, Salah Stétié, Jean-Loup Philippe and Zeno Bianu. But she has also published classics of ancient and modern Japanese literature, such as Bashô or Natsume Sòséki. She has also dealt with the writings of Rainer Maria Rilke, Victor Hugo, René Char, James Joyce, García Lorca and Victor Ségalen. Today, she boasts almost one hundred volumes, with a circulation of no more than one hundred copies each. The average print run is usually 25 copies.

Four-handed work

She spent his time choosing relatively modest-dimension, almost square formats. But she also made large rectangular boxes as illustrated books, in accordance with the tradition for these sizes. As for the artists, they were authors from his gallery. For example, Pierre Delcourt, Takahisa Kamiya.  Recently, she dedicated a book to Uruguayan Carmelo Arden Quin, André-Pierre Arnal, Arthur Aeschbacher and Christian Jaccard. The works of art are often in the original. But others are engravings, or serigraphs, and several of them are made using etching or silkscreen reproduction techniques. The publisher does not have different rules than other publishers in this genre. But for her, the four- handed work is very important.

Diversity and creative freedom

Her originality lies first of all in the open choices she makes: she did not want to close herself off within a small circle. Moreover, her books are not conceived in a serial way. She loves diversity and creative freedom more than the fixed image of the publisher. Today she is one of the most interesting publishers of “artist books” in France. This type of activity is still vital in France and has many collectors. Akié Arichi managed to make her way in an area dominated by Maeght and Autrechose, in a context of hundreds of publishing houses of various types and importance. This could happen thanks to her perseverance and ambition.

Akiè Arichi editore, artisti francesi, sudamericani e giapponesi

Akiè Arichi editore, lavoro a quattro mani
