Il National Mask Festival della Guinea nel 2021 cade, come le precedenti edizioni, a metà luglio. Esso è dedicato alla gente della East New Britain che vive a Tolai, Baining, Pomio. Festival di danza soprattutto, ma c’è anche canto e poi ogni tipo di performance ed eventi espositivi dedicati a varie arti e mestieri. Inizialmente fu iniziativa della gente Tolai soltanto, ma via via si sono unite altre aree, cosicché adesso vi partecipano tutte le culture di Baining, Pomio, Sulka. Il Festival viene celebrato a Kokopo, East New Britain, dura quattro giorni. I primi due riguardano la gente di Tolai Tubuans in canoa che martellano i loro caratteristici tamburi. I rimanenti giorni viene celebrato il Warwagira, altra varietà di danza. Buona parte delle maschere indossate sono antiche.
Guinea, The National Mask Festival 2021
The 2021 National Mask Festival in Guinea is devoted to the people of East New Britain, living in Tolai, Baining, Pomio. It will be performed on mid-july and is mainly based on dancing, and also singing, many kinds of performances, while on show there are different sorts of arts and crafts. The Festival was first started by the Tolai people of the Gazelle Peninsula. Little by little other areas joined it, till the whole of East New Britain’s cultures tied to Baining, Pomio and Sulka people.
The celebration takes place in Kokopo, East New Britain, and lasts four days, and the first two begin with Tolai Tubuans people arriving in canoes playing their peculiar drums. The other two days are covered by the so called Warwagira, which consists of dances. Most masks are ancient.
