President Biden has publicly taken responsibility for a war, which is first a defeat, which the entire American ruling class is bearing. He declared he went to Afghanistan to fight terrorism and not to take over the country’s military protectorate. But he did so, without explaining why this happened. For twenty years, Al Qaeda’s members have been neutralized and their bases destroyed, but USA never intended to put an end to hostilities. And this was clear to the entire world.
Everything was predictable and nothing was done
The abandonment of Iraq had caused hard consequences which today are still active. The situation generated for Syria, Libya and all the countries that had been first destabilized and then abandoned in rubble. Biden said that the Kabul government was unable to resist the Taliban. But if the Taliban had kept the most powerful NATO-backed army in check, it isn’t easy to think that they would surrender to Afghan soldiers who hadn’t likely been paid for six months.
The defense of human rights is valid only as abstract justification
There is another problem: the defense of women’s rights and, more generally, of human life. Once again history has taught anything. When the Shah of Persia Reza Pahlavi decided to modernize Iranian customs powerfully, the result was a popular revolution mainly provoked by different kinds of people and at the same time the establishment of the first Islamic Republic. You could add that similar violence has been used on the occasion of the fight for women’s rights in Nigeria as well as in South Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Mauritania, Congo, Nepal, Mali, Chad, Yemen and many other countries. But no army has ever reacted to defend them.
The war, what’s the use?
Biden publicly took responsibility for a defeat. And actually he did his best. But according to the media, the real solid reason of these conflicts is just money. The incredible figures relating to the costs of this conflict have been published. But what does cost mean? It means that taxpayers have paid for arms and equipment to the companies that manufacture them for twenty years. In fact, transparency is one of the American institutional system’s strengths. It would be appropriate to disclose the figures of those who have got profits from this tragedy as well as of those members of Congress tied to the affair.

Il presidente Biden si è assunto pubblicamente la responsabilità di una guerra, e soprattutto, di una sconfitta, che tutta la classe dirigente americana porta con sé. Ha detto che si era andati in Afghanistan per combattere il terrorismo e non per assumersi il protettorato militare del Paese. Ma non ha spiegato come mai ciò sia accaduto. Come in vent’anni, neutralizzati i membri di Al Qaeda e distrutte le loro basi, non si sia deciso di chiudere le ostilità. E non si può dire che questa esperienza fosse sconosciuta agli Usa.
Tutto era prevedibile e nulla si è fatto
L’abbandono dell’Iraq aveva avuto e ha ancora tristissime conseguenze. Lo stesso vale per la Siria, la Libia e per tutti i Paesi prima destabilizzati e poi abbandonati in macerie. Biden ha detto che il governo di Kabul non è stato capace di resistere ai talebani. Ma se i talebani avevano tenuto in scacco il più potente esercito del mondo, sostenuto dalla Nato, come si poteva pensare che si arrendessero a soldati afghani che, secondo alcune informazioni, non erano pagati da sei mesi? La difesa dei diritti umani vale solo come giustificazione teorica
Ma c’è un altro aspetto della questione: la difesa dei diritti delle donne e, più in generale, della vita umana. Anche in questo caso la storia non ha insegnato nulla? Quando lo scià di Persia Reza Pahlavi decise di modernizzare i costumi degli iraniani dall’alto, quale fu il risultato? Una rivoluzione popolare di quelle che si vedono raramente e l’istituzione della prima Repubblica Islamica. E per quanto riguarda i diritti delle donne, in Nigeria, Sud Sudan, Arabia Saudita, Iran, Mauritania, Congo, Nepal, Mali, Ciad, Yemen e tanti altri Paesi, esse non subiscono analoghe o anche peggiori violenze? Ma nessun esercito si è mai mosso per difenderle.
Per chi la guerra è stata un ottimo affare?
Biden si è assunto pubblicamente la responsabilità di una sconfitta. Ma poteva fare di più. I media hanno accennato a una ragione ben più solida per spiegare conflitti come quello in questione: il denaro. Sono state pubblicate le incredibili cifre relative ai costi di questo conflitto. Ma che significa costi? Significa che i contribuenti hanno pagato per venti anni armi ed equipaggiamenti alle aziende che le fabbricano. E dal momento che la trasparenza è uno dei pregi del sistema istituzionale americano, non sarebbe opportuno che venissero resi noti i soggetti che hanno percepito utili da questa tragedia e i loro rapporti con diversi componenti del Congresso?
