In the sense of treasure
Latin urn and vase communicate the sense of treasure. They evoke the idea of a permanent content, which can be precious and sometimes sacred, which needs to be preserved over time. Cinerary urn, flowerpot: store of life, container of fertile earth. Virtually archaeological furniture and decorations populate the territories of the parks and gardens, woods, and meadows of human geography.
Thus, the installed objects insinuate themselves, in their own way, among plants, foliage, meadows, herbs, and ponds which must be in the background and in the idea of an herbivorous project that an artist prefers when imagining a wood or a garden, and then he paints it or inhabits it with his urns or vases. When it makes its ambush as opposed to the agents of the temporal rays, the atmospheric agents, the natural reforestation, the nesting of animals. The latter – elements that contribute to a transformation in the making. Already! So archeology.
Nature comes to help. Here, it is cultivated and therefore forgiving. The landscape, observed with attention and respect, immediately begins to speak. It tells of the primordial pleasure of wild freedom, of the passion of hunting, of the Eden forgotten for other pastures, of the rapture of reciprocated love, of the melancholy of the dying day. Here, in a stillness which is lighter than air, time is abolished. Or it flows in parallel. It is not difficult to escape from oneself, to detach from oneself, or to have only oneself as interlocutor. You always see the sky above you. You know about the earth now, as then, only a very small part. Unfortunately, this tiny part, which he/she now knows as a wandering guest, resembles only himself/herself. Beyond that, there is the world: large enough, immensely alien.
The condition of being a foreigner requires the laws of hospitality. There is no gift that is not primarily a gift of reciprocity.
In the name of hospitality, a stone of the path is buried.
Here the path is born. In the sinister aquarium light, in the thick of the trees and in the glare of the clearings there are objects-concepts lurking for the human sign of the superhuman beauty of the primordial: natural beauty or extreme horror: fumes, humidors, insect attacks, darkness, ambiguous flashes.
Where the shadows hasten their fleeting step, weary nocturnal sentinels, the artist’s imperceptible step slips away silently and leaves traces: dragons in jeweled mail or clad in acidic armor, dinosaurs tomorrow or filthy crawling monsters, or chirping goblins chatting at the end of the night with the bird.
However, it is not the fairy tale of these wonders hidden in the woods that gives us the pleasure constituted by the intertwining of elementary sensations that are renewed when in contact with plants and herbs. On the contrary, the intellectual pleasure that is obtained from the logical processes of comparison and deduction, from the theory of mental associations that recall other places, other journeys through the artifacts in the garden of Man.
