Despite the serious dangers that the herd immunity theory brings with it, political strategies to deal with the pandemic are strongly influenced by it.

Certainly Bojo and the scientific community are not in harmony at all. Actually we’re dealing with health and death as far as the pandemic is concerned. The British prime minister, in fact, has just recovered his idea of the beginning about herd immunity. Also he now supports it assuming that with mass vaccination the number of deaths has lessen meaningfully. He has then proclaimed the Freedom Day, i.e. July 19th, as the starting date for the English to be totally free from restrictions due to the pandemic. In other words, those who have been – or will soon be – vaccinated can become infected without being hospitalized and in a non-dangerous way. The unvaccinated will be predominantly young and would be lightly touched by virus, as they would be “naturally” immunized.

Among the scientific researchers there are some who are worried by such Bojo’s strategy. They would assume that we do not yet know how many people, among those who fall ill, will carry some diseases due to Covid for the rest of their lives. We don’t know its severity. They also maintain that the virus super-spread will inevitably cause new variants, which could be lethal for adults and children, or could bypass the vaccines developed up to now. Furthermore, it is easy to remember that in the most fragile subjects and among the less wealthy populations, Covid is deadly for a huge number of elderly or adults. Therefore, this is very far from morality.

On the other hand, the average of vaccinated people out of the total population, although considerable, doesn’t mean that the youngest are far from being infected and from the risk to be hospitalized.

The WHO prescribes the use of masks in closed spaces even for the vaccinated people. On the other side, the political rulers – elsewhere and not only in England – talk about an exit from the tunnel, hence normality and reopening, restarts and other recurring mantras useful only to avoid protests of mass. Numerous scientists denounced the risk of such liberty as they explained a in a letter they addressed to Bojo, and which was published by the Lancet. Bu it was an unsuccessful claim.
