The Magicians, the manufactured review

A series that has gone under the radar with curious facets.

The series moves from a teen drama, but overlapping fairytale and supernatural elements without causing an indigestible meatloaf. And it is not easy. It would have been very easy to spoil the genuine narrative tension that resulted from the initial incipit, but, apart from some slowness, it awakens with some rather original ideas.

Musical choices function as keys to certain narrative twists. The alchemy between the characters and the situations in which you find they have interesting and fun traits. It does not spoil an ending that is not falsely consoling. Mourning and difficult choices are not censored. The theme of the pagan deity is recontextualized in a fanciful way.

Inevitably, there is some forcing in a youthful sense.

The relationship with a literary matrix. Fillory brings an epicness to the series. Important is the mention of Narnia with a clock instead of a wardrobe full of coats.

A less childish reinterpretation of the fairytale elements. Fauns and fairies possessing an active sexuality.

It explores friendly relationships and sometimes fulfilled desires and sometimes frustrated.

Death is not the end but remains an unsurpassed element of separation.

Magic as fascinating as it is dangerous. Everything pays off and the series reminds us of it many times.

It would have been interesting if it had been all a great concerted spell to teach these restless kids to become adults. Interesting approach to different sexualities.
