The Climate Museum New York City

Environment and art

The environment and its conservation have inspired many artists for decades committed to raising public awareness about the need to change the path. Only recently this topics reach the peak: the climate crisis is definitely reality and science tells us that we are close to the extreme point.

But unity is strength. That’s why in New York, Governors Island,  in 2015 the first American museum on the climate was born, The Climate Museum. The following year it became a non-profit organization with the purpose  “… to inspire action on the climate crisis with programming through the arts and sciences that deepens understanding, builds connections and promotes right solutions”.

The Climate Museum and civic commitment

In a cultural climate where US citizens are silent, The Climate Museum promotes an active climate culture by aggregating people, hinging on their civic commitment and to invite them to dialogue, to get to know the problems, looking for possible solutions. With this goal, the Second Fridays meetings at The Climate Museum are born, i.e. that every second Friday of the month a special meeting is expected. The next one will be held on September, 10th. The meetings, entitled Talking Climate !, focus on climate and inequalities.

Beyond Lies and The Climate Museum

On July 31, the museum launched Mona Chalabi’s Beyond Lies campaign-project on Governors Island. The initiative investigates the fossil fuel industry, truths, lies, delays and misinformation, through various initiatives which are constantly updated  on the museum’s website.

A British woman, of Iraqi origins, Chalabi (1987)  lives in the US. She  is a journalist for The Guardian US, a writer, and has run Tv programs for BBC and National Geographic. She is one of the creators of the Emmy Award-nominated Vagina Dispatches video series and she is also an illustrator: her posters are the leit motif of the museum project. Posters of the Beyond Lies campaign are displayed at the museum and at five other sites in New York. Other locations may be added if devoted to spread the theme of the campaign.

Beyond Individual Blame, Beyond Empty Promises, Beyond Business As Usual: three posters, created ad hoc, for three issues and insights also available online.

L’ambiente e l’arte

Beyond Lies e The Climate Museum
