Da sempre i traditori della patria sono ritenuti tra i peggiori malfattori, perché commettono un crimine contro l’intera propria comunità, dunque quello che oggi chiameremmo crimine contro l’umanità.
Non si tratta di chi cospira contro il sovrano, o il Capo dello Stato, o il Governatore, ma chi per denaro o ideologia mette a rischio la vita e la sicurezza dei suoi compatrioti o concittadini.
Nel girone più profondo
Dante è molto preciso nel designare i traditori della patria, che colloca nel IX girone infernale (canto XXXII), quello peggiore che termina nella Giudecca dove siede Lucifero, e che individua in Bocca degli Abati, Gano di Maganza, Tebaldello de Zambrasi, il Conte Ugolino e l’Arcivescovo Ruggieri degli Ubaldini.
Si tratta di personaggi che si sono venduti ai nemici ed hanno consegnato loro la propria città, o hanno indotto la sconfitta del proprio esercito a favore degli avversari, o hanno consegnato i propri compagni al nemico. Si tratta di tradimenti diversi da quelli a danno degli ospiti, dei benefattori, dei propri cari, perché le vittime del tradimento della patria sono un intero popolo dello Stato o Nazione o Città.
Peraltro il girone dei traditori della patria è l’unico punto dell’Inferno in cui Dante tocca un dannato, Bocca degli Abati, e lo prende letteralmente per la ‘cuticagna’ strappandogli i capelli, tanto era la rabbia che sentiva verso quegli odiosi malfattori.
Spionaggio
Le spie sono traditori della patria, come l’ufficiale della marina militare italiana che ha venduto segreti militari alla Russia, mettendo in pericolo anche la sicurezza di nostri militari all’estero. I più famosi del novecento sono stati Mata Hari e Kim Philby, mentre nell’antichità si citano Antenore, che avrebbe tradito Troia, Tarpea, che avrebbe aperto le porte di Roma ai Sabini, forse Arminio, giovane germano allevato dai romani fino al grado di ufficiale che tramò contro Roma sconfiggendola nella battaglia di Teutoburgo.
Il più grave dei delitti
Che il tradimento della patria sia il più grave delitto contro lo Stato lo prevede anche la nostra Costituzione, per la quale il Presidente della Repubblica, per gli atti compiuti nell’esercizio delle sue funzioni, può essere sottoposto a giudizio solo per alto tradimento e attentato alla Costituzione (art. 90 Cost.).
Tuttavia occorre anche dire che non si rinvengono nella storia moltissimi casi di tradimento della patria, se confrontati con altri tipi di tradimento. Forse la forza che tiene insieme una comunità è molto maggiore di quello che si crede.
Il patto sociale dei concittadini o connazionali si basa su una identità di lingua, cultura, storia, religione, oltre che su legami biologici ed etnici (nazione viene da natio: nascita), riscontrabile sin dall’antichità: già Israele o i Greci avevano una fortissima identità che potrebbe definirsi nazionale. E naturalmente “la patria è la fede nella patria” come disse Giuseppe Mazzini, dunque la patria è forse soprattutto un’idea e un sentimento.
Betrayals and pandemics
As always, traitors to the homeland are considered to be among the worst malefactors, because they commit a crime against their entire community, what today we would call a crime against humanity.
It is not about who conspires against the sovereign, or the head of the state, or the governor, but who for money or ideology puts the lives and security at risk of his compatriots or citizens.
In the deepest circle
Dante is very precise in designating the traitors of the homeland, which he places in the ninth circle of hell (canto XXXII), the worst that ends in Giudecca where Lucifer sits, and that identifies in Bocca degli Abati, Gano di Maganza, Tebaldello de Zambrasi, il Conte Ugolino and l’Arcivescovo Ruggieri degli Ubaldini.
These are characters who have sold themselves to their enemies and handed over their city, or they induced the defeat of their own army in favour of the adversaries, or they have handed over their comrades to the enemy. These are betrayals other than those against the guests, of the benefactors, of the loved ones, because the victims of the betrayal of the homeland are an entire people of the state or nation or city.
Furthermore, the group of traitors to the homeland it is the only point in Hell where Dante touches a damned, Bocca degli Abati, and he literally takes it for the ‘cuticagna’ tearing off his hair, such was the anger he felt towards those hateful criminals.
Espionage
Spies are traitors of the homeland, like the Italian navy officer who sold military secrets to Russia, also endangering the security of our military abroad. The most famous of the twentieth century were Mata Hari and Kim Philby.
In ancient times we mention Antenore, who would betray Troy; Tarpea, that would open the gates of Rome to the Sabini; maybe Arminio, a young German raised by the Romans to the rank of officer who plotted against Rome by defeating it in the battle of Teutoburg.
The most serious crime
Our Constitution also provides for the betrayal of the homeland to be the most serious crime against the State, for which the President of the Republic, for acts performed in the exercise of its functions, can only be tried for high treason and an attack on the Constitution (art. 90 Cost.).
However, it must also be said that there are not many cases of betrayal of the homeland in history, when compared to other types of betrayal. Perhaps the strength that holds a community together is much greater than is believed.
The social pact of fellow citizens or compatriots is based on a language, culture, history, religious, identity, as well as on biological and ethnic ties (nation comes from natio: birth), found since ancient times: already Israel or the Greeks had a very strong identity that could be defined as national. And, naturally, “the homeland is the faith in the homeland” as was said by Giuseppe Mazzini, therefore the homeland is perhaps above all an idea and a feeling.
